Getting Started
CDU begins with two predefined configurations (“Sets”). Click on the menu bar at the right top of your screen (just to the left of the Application menu).
Select a Set from the drop-down menu.
The features that activate immediately in every Set are: Energy Star, Display, Hot Keys, and Keyboard Power.
New Settings
To create a new User:
1. Press the User pop-up near the top of the left panel.
2. Select New User.
3. Fill a User name in the Name box. Complete the Tag, Organization, Phone, and Address boxes. Click OK.
To create a new Set:
1. Press the Set pop-up near the top of the right panel.
2. Select New Set (default) to create a new Set of settings that is the same as the original predefined settings.
3. Type a Set name. Click OK.
4. Adjust feature settings using the control panel.
5. Click the box at the upper left in the bar to close the Panel. The new settings will be saved under the current User and Set names.
AppManager
AppManager is a quick way to switch between applications using key combinations. You can switch back to the previous application, forward to the next application or toggle between the two most recent applications.
You can replace the defaults with your own Hot Keys.
Use a combination of a letter plus Command/Control/Option/Shift:
1. To change the default hot key, select the long box under each item and type a Hot Key combination.
2. Select “Hide Background Applications” to hide the windows of applications which are not currently active.
3. To display recently used applications and files in the CDU menu, click the appropriate check boxes.
Balloon Help
Balloon Help lets you remove the Balloon Help menu and show balloons instantly.
1. Select “Remove Balloon Help Menu” to remove the Balloon Help menu from the menu bar.
2. Select the modifiers key(s) to turn on Help Balloons instantly.
Desktop
The Desktop panel lets you adjust the appearance of the desktop in two ways.
1. You can select color schemes by using the pop-up menu inside this panel, or by using the CDU menu.
2. The Special Color Schemes also include color coordinated desktop patterns. To use them with the Color Scheme, check this box. If you wish to use your own patterns, uncheck this box. You can modify the pattern using the General Controls panel.
3. To display a picture as the desktop background, click Choose Picture File. Use the directory dialog box that appears to select a picture. The name of the picture will appear next to the “Desktop Picture:” title. To remove a picture, click the Remove Picture button.
Display
The Display appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen in the menu bar. It shows disk activity, free disk space, date and time.
1. Check the boxes next to the items you want displayed.
2. Select a time format from the choices under “Time.”
3. Click the “Hourly Chime Sound” box so that the clock chimes on the hour. Select the chime sound using the pop-up menu.
4. Check “Continuous Rotation” if you want the Display to continuously cycle through all the selected items.
5. If you don’t, the first display item you chose will remain fixed in the Display. Press Option and click on the CDU display to rotate through all the selected items.
6. Use the pop-up menus at the bottom of the panel to adjust Display font and size.
Expert
The Expert Screen controls only need to be adjusted in special situations. Start by leaving all the settings at the defaults.
See the Reference section on Expert in the User Manual if:
1. You want startup floppy disks or SCSI drives to be ejected whenever you Restart.
2. You don’t want to turn AppleTalk on without restarting.
3. You don’t want CDU to remember the sound level, monitor color depth and desktop pattern from previous sessions.
4. You want to disable CDU at boot time occasionally, but don’t want to use the ~ (Tilde) key because that conflicts with another Extension.
5. You want to change the Hot Key combination that opens the CDU control panel.
Extended Keys
1. When the check box labeled “Enable Scrolling Keys” is checked, a standard keyboard can emulate extended keyboard scrolling keys. Hold down the Control key and press up arrow for page up, down arrow for page down, left arrow for Home, right arrow for End, and Delete for Forward Delete.
2. When the check box labeled “Enable Function Keys” is checked, a standard keyboard can emulate extended keyboard function keys. Hold down the Control key and 1 through 0 for F1 through F10, and -, + ,[ ,] ,\ for F11 through F15.
Hot Keys
Hot Keys are a quick way to control the Mac using key combinations. The Hot Keys can be configured to type text, open an item or auto-type the date.
1. To add a hot key, click the Add button.
2. To edit a hot key, click the hot key and then click the Edit button.
3. To delete a hot key, click the hot key and then click the Delete button.
4. To configure the hot key’s action, select Type, Open or Auto-type Date from the Action pop-up menu. If you select Type, enter in the Text field the text to be typed. If you select Open, click the File button to select the item to be opened.
5. To configure the hot key’s combination, select Press field under each item and type a Hot Key combination. You have to hold down the modifier keys (Command, Control, Option, and/or Shift) while you type a letter. You can’t use Shift plus a letter.
6. Avoid combinations used for another purpose (like Command-C).
Keyboard Power
Keyboard Menus lets you choose menus from the keyboard, instead of using the mouse. Every menu name and menu item will display with one letter underlined. To select a menu or menu item, hold down Control plus one other modifier key and type the underlined letter.
Keyboard Dialogs does the same for dialog boxes.
1. Check the “Keyboard Menus” box.
2. Choose a second modifier key by checking one of the boxes next to Shift, Option, or Command.
3. Check “Select item on keypress” if you want action as soon as you type the key combination. Otherwise, you must hit Enter or Return when you select a menu item.
4. To turn on Keyboard Dialogs, check the box “Enable Keyboard Dialogs.”
Menu Activation modifies how the mouse works with menus.
1. If you want the usual menu action, select “Normal.”
2. If you want the menus to drop whenever the cursor passes over them, select “Auto-Drop.”
3. If you want the menus to drop and stay down when you click on them and release, select “Click-Drop.”
Energy Star 
The Energy Star panel provides two ways to decrease energy waste by your Mac. It reduces power consumption and electromagnetic emission. The Auto-Shutdown feature shuts down any Mac that can be turned on with the keyboard’s Power On key. It will not shutdown Macs with on/off power switches such as Classics and LCs.
1. Select the long box under “Activate Screen Dimmer” and type the Hot Key combination you want to use. For tips on setting key combinations see “Hot Keys.”
2. Set the brightness you want the monitor dimmed in the Dim % box. 0% fully dims the monitor.
3. Adjust the slide bar to the amount of time you want to wait before the Screen Dimmer comes on by itself. Select “never” if you don’t want to use the time-out.
4. Adjust the slide bar to the amount of time you want to wait before the Mac automatically shuts down. Select “never” if you don’t want to use the time-out.
5. If you do not want your Mac to automatically shut down, for example, if your Mac is a network file server, set the slider control to “never”.
Security
Security lets you protect access to your Macintosh.
1. To change the default hot key, select the long box under “Instant Security.” Type the key combination you want to use, or leave the default. To use Instant Security, type the key combination.
2. Adjust the slide bar to the amount of time you want before Security comes on by itself. Select “never” if you don’t want to use the time-out. If you want Security when the screen is dimmed, select the same time set in the Screen Dimmer timer.
3. Choose Password or Graphic Security by clicking one of the two radio buttons.
Graphic Security
1. Select “Use Graphic” in the Security Panel. Click Choose Picture File.
2. A dialog box will appear. Select a PICT file. Use the one that came on the original CDU diskette or create your own.
3. Read the dialog box and click OK.
4. Select a hot spot by click-dragging.
5. Click once inside the flashing box you created. If you want to use a modifier key, hold one down while you click. Use that key from now on to get through this hot spot.
6. Read the dialog box and click Verify.
7. Click in the hot spot again to verify, (using the modifier key if you did before.) Security is now installed.
Password Security
1. Select “Use Password” in the Security Panel, type the password twice, once in New Password and again in Verify. Hit Return. Security is enabled.
2. When Password Security is triggered (by start or restart a Mac), a dialog box appears, asking for the password. The Name and Organization you entered when you first installed CDU will also be on this screen.
3. You may want this startup screen to also display your address and phone number. If so, select Configure User from the User pop-up menu and fill out the complete dialog box that appears.
